LED signage application

Application

A leading manufacturer of high-end AV-products developed a new exclusive illuminated signage concept for their specialized retail stores.

Letter- and logo-shaped PCB’s carrying surface-mounted white LED’s are embedded into the rear-side of CNC machined Aluminium letters and logo. Light emitting from these LED’s is supposed to illuminate the wall to which the letters and logo are mounted, creating a uniform white and homogeneous “halo” or “corona” surrounding these.

Most important customer requirements

Because of a very limited distance between the LED’s and the wall, the spots illuminated by the individual LED’s do not overlap completely, and the halo appears non-uniform or “spotty”. Furthermore, the LED light appeared to have an undesired “bluish” tint.

The customer turned to PSC for a solution to these problems:

Solution

PSC developed an optimized Solaris™ S colour correction filter, which integrates 1) a diffusive component which scatters the light from the individual LED’s in order to create a homogeneous halo and 2) a yellow component which efficiently suppresses the undesired bluish discolouration originating from the LED’s.

Customer benefits

Integration of the Solaris™ optical filter into the signage concept the customer achieved exactly the visual expression and colour desired and demanded by their corporate identity manual.
